While travel and tourism picked up in Dubai since mid-2010, investors still avoid to invest heavily in the emirate, whose stock market's trading turnover plummeted by more than 60 percent last year.

Can cigarette ads really lure kids to smoke?

While it's not the first time researchers have tied cigarette advertisements to teen smoking, the new study makes the link more solid by showing that tobacco ads wield influence even when other advertising does not.
Researcher Dr. James Sargent of Dartmouth Medical School, in Hanover, New Hampshire, said people have wondered whether previous studies had simply identified kids who were receptive to all kinds of behavioral prompts, such as advertising images in general.
"This study shows that it is the specific images from tobacco ads that predict smoking and not such a character trait," he told Reuters Health in an e-mail.
To make this distinction, Sargent and colleagues surveyed more than 2,000 teenagers who had never smoked. Participants were shown billboard advertisements for six different cigarettes and eight other commercial products, with all brand information removed. The researchers then asked each teen how often they had seen each image and if they could identify the represented brand.
During the following nine months, about 13 percent of the teens began smoking, the researchers runescape money report in the journal Pediatrics. And the greater their exposure to cigarette advertisements in the past, the more likely they were to take up the habit.
Even after accounting for other factors that might increase a kid's risk for smoking -- including age, sex, family's economic situation, school performance and having a parent or friend that smokes -- the top third of teens in terms of exposure and brand recognition had nearly a 50 percent greater risk of lighting up, on average, compared to teens in the bottom third.
Meanwhile, exposure to ads for other products, including candies, toothpaste, mobile phones and cars, did not appear to make kids more susceptible to smoking.
"Tobacco companies know how to get kids attuned to the type of advertising that will change their behavior," Thomas Glynn of the American Cancer Society in Washington, D.C., who was not involved in the current study, told Reuters Health.
Early adolescence is a common time for kids to take up the habit -- nearly a quarter of all high school students in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. It is also the period in which youths develop their own identities independent of parents and other role models, noted Sargent.
"They do this by 'trying on' things they see others doing, much like trying on clothes in a store. They try smoking, in part, because of the way they view other smokers and also runescape accounts in part because of what they think smoking might do for them," he said. "For example, a young male might adopt smoking to appear more manly -- like the Marlboro man."
In addition to masculinity, tobacco advertisements may directly or subtly hint that smoking is tied to sex appeal, independence or thinness for girls.
Of course, the tobacco industry has had to become increasingly clever at getting these messages across to kids, as more restrictions have come into place, said Glynn.
Cigarette advertisements are now banned from U.S. billboards, televisions and radios, and have become rare in print magazines. Still, both the U.S. and Germany lag behind severalother countries such as Italy and New Zealand that have implemented total bans on cigarette advertising, according to the researchers.
"Any parent who takes a close look around their teenager's environment would be appalled by the amount of imagery that teenagers can and do get exposed to given that we have restrictions," Glynn added. "They don't see it on TV or hear it on radio, but it is everywhere."
Most advertising in the U.S. now occurs at point of sale locations, such as grocery stores, and through direct marketing, William Shadel of RAND Corporation, in Pittsburgh, told Reuters Health in an e-mail.
Shadel, who was also not involved in the current study, noted that it would be important to know how readily findings based on billboard advertisements might translate to these other forms of advertisement.
The researchers suggest that when teens abstain from smoking, they may be unlikely to pick up the habit later in life. Meanwhile, nearly a third of teen smokers will continue smoking and die early from a smoking-related disease, according to the CDC.

Michelle Williams: There's a hole in my life
It's been almost three years since runescape gold Heath Ledger's death and his former fiance, Michelle Williams, is only now opening up about her struggle to return to normality since his loss. The "Blue Valentine" star talks to Marie Claire about losing Ledger, raising their daughter Matilda Rose as a single parent, and how her work saved her when she was lost in her own grief.
Heath Ledger died from an accidental drug overdose on January 22, 2008, five months after he and Williams had separated, at the age of 28. Their daughter, Matilda Rose, was 2 years old. Though the couple had split, Ledger was still a huge part of Williams' life, and his passing hit her hard, and continues to do so three years down the road. "Very obviously, for me and for her [daughter Matilda], there's a hole in our life," Williams says, adding, "Of course the natural inclination is to want to fill it and make it disappear, but what I've come to recently is that it's impossible. Nothing will fit in that hole because what we want back we can't get, which is this one person. I'm not going to runescape money rush anything and scamper around like a mad person and make myself crazy. I'm trying to be respectful of the absence. I'm not trying to fill it up. It is what it is."
Williams has had other relationships since Ledger's passing, including one with film director Spike Jonze, but she hasn't yet found a man she wants to settle down with for the rest of her life. "I don't know what my version of a relationship or marriage is yet, because the typical model seems a little broken to me," admits the star. "At the same time, I was raised on all those princess fairy tales and I'm a romantic; I want to be a one-man girl."
She hasn't given up hope though, and even has a sense of humor about the rumors that surfaced recently about her and her handsome "Blue Valentine" co-star Ryan Gosling. Traveling the world for work over the past few years, Williams found solace in the characters she played, and new purpose and drive in challenging herself every day on set. It has its rewards, but it's not a dinner party."
Adds Williams, "I'm constantly pushed up against the wall of what I'm capable of doing, and that can be an excruciating place to confront yourself. But I don't want to lose sight of the fact that work gives you a good feeling about yourself. My work has seen me through a lot of situations, and if not for work, I would have stayed stuck in the experience. I've had something outside of myself to attend to, and it's carried me through. It's been invaluable, and I runescape money want to pass on that lesson to my daughter."
Though she suffered a tragedy few do at such a young age -- she was 27 -- Williams is philosophical about her loss, and is grateful for the love, support, and resources she has at her disposal. To give credit where credit is due, I was sharing a difficulty I was experiencing with Reese Witherspoon, and she said, 'Yes, I understand, but think about how much more difficult this would be without the luxury of a reliable, steady income.' From that day forward, my eyes were open, and it changed my attitude. Everyone has challenges; everyone has a tragedy. I met mine a ff14 gil little early. Or a lot early."

Miss Nebraska wins 2011 Miss America pageant
A 17-year-old aspiring politician runescape gold from Nebraska captured the Miss America crown on Saturday after beating 52 other young women from across the United States.
Teresa Scanlan won a $50,000 scholarship and a yearlong run with the crown at the competition at the Planet Hollywood casino-resort in Las Vegas, giving the Cornhusker State its first-ever win at the pageant.
"And I never passed up a cookie on my journey here," Scanlan said.
She's the youngest Miss America since the pageant implemented age limits in 1938. Rosemary LaPlanche was runner-up in 1940 and easily won the crown in 1941 despite being one month too young to compete, according to the pageant's website.
On Saturday, Scanlan said age didn't matter, though she thought she might have been an underdog because of her youth.
"We were on an even playing field," she said. "From 17 to 24, that can be a runescape money huge age range. But with these girls, they are all at the highest level imaginible."
Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won $25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for third place.
Scanlan, a recent high school graduate from the western Nebraska town of Gering, planned to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia after her reign as Miss America.
She said she also hoped to attend law school, become a judge and eventually a politician.
But up first, she'll register to vote after runescape accounts she turns 18 next month, making decisions based on ideas rather than political affiliations, she said.
"I do think I will register as an Independent," Scanlan said. "All the bipartisanship has become ridiculous and it's time to look at issues instead of parties."

The contestants — from every state plus the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico — started the show by dancing up the aisles while wearing silver cocktail dresses.

In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley called Giffords her mentor.
The pageant celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. The Miss America Organization bills itself as the country's largest scholarship provider for women, with $349,000 in prizes given this year at the national level.

"And I never passed up a cookie on my journey here," Scanlan said.
She's the youngest Miss America since the pageant implemented age limits in 1938. Rosemary LaPlanche was runner-up in 1940 and easily won the crown in 1941 despite being one month too young to compete, according to the pageant's website.
On Saturday, Scanlan said age didn't matter, though she thought she might have been an underdog because of her youth.
"We were on an even playing field," she said. "From 17 to 24, that can be a runescape money huge age range. But with these girls, they are all at the highest level imaginible."
Miss Arkansas Alyse Eady won $25,000 as first runner-up, while Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier won $20,000 for third place.
Scanlan, a recent high school graduate from the western Nebraska town of Gering, planned to study American politics at Patrick Henry College in Virginia after her reign as Miss America.
She said she also hoped to attend law school, become a judge and eventually a politician.
But up first, she'll register to vote after runescape accounts she turns 18 next month, making decisions based on ideas rather than political affiliations, she said.
"I do think I will register as an Independent," Scanlan said. "All the bipartisanship has become ridiculous and it's time to look at issues instead of parties."
Scanlan won after strutting in a black bikini and a white evening gown, playing "White Water Chopped Sticks" on piano and telling the audience that when it comes to the website Wikileaks, security should come before public access to government information.
"You know when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation, we have to focus on security first and then people's right to know, because it's so important that everybody who's in our borders is safe and so we can't let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly," she said.
Scanlan said the question was easier for her than a generic question, because ff14 gil she has routinely discussed current events with her family, she said.
The contestants — from every state plus the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico — started the show by dancing up the aisles while wearing silver cocktail dresses.
A panel of seven judges eyed them for looks and fitness. The competition included evening gown, talent and interview portions, with eliminations for 15 finalists, then 12, then 10, five and finally the winner along the way.
The judges had picked Miss Oklahoma Emoly West; Miss Texas Ashley Melnick; Miss Rhode Island Deborah Saint-Vil; Miss Utah Christina Lowe; Miss Washington Jacquie Brown; Miss Arizona Kathryn Bulkley; Miss Virginia Caitlin Uze, and Miss California Arianna Afsar.
Fans voted in Miss New York Claire Buffie and Miss Delaware Kayla Martell.
And in a first-ever twist for the contest, the young women picked two finalists themselves, Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent and Miss Oregon Stephenie Denise Steers.
In her introduction to the audience, Bulkley dedicated her performance to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head last week in Tucson. Bulkley called Giffords her mentor.
The pageant celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. The Miss America Organization bills itself as the country's largest scholarship provider for women, with $349,000 in prizes given this year at the national level.
Scanlan said she planned to defer her university runescape money enrollment until she finishes her reign with the crown.
